Module positioning

Hi there,
how can I influence the module position in the column layout? To be honest, I don't understand either the Module Layout options or the Column Layout options.

Could you please explain it to me. Where can I influence what?
For example: I want a module starting in column 3. Like the first example in this picture: demo.joomlaplates.com/jp_sounds/images/j...s_column_layouts.png
