Problem solved.

1) what is the difference with the 'additional script' option? Can that be used also?
Extensions -> template -> [templatename] -> settings -> scroll to bottom
Insert your Google Analytics tracking code or any other additional scripts here. They will be added before the closing body tag in the theme.

2) I have added the code but still google reports no visits. Do I need to check anything else (module, plugin?)

Hi there,
the difference is:
1.) If you insert the script from template option the script is at the end of the site
2.) If you add the script in the file >> layouts/theme.php the script is between the header

Please visit your site and press the right mouse > view source code and check if your code is available
